Fantastic, Leanna! That sounded great – perfect pace and tone. It really is worth learning a song well. Also love the sound of your fiddle.

I worked on Swallowtail Jig as well during the challenge and as you can see I haven’t quite committed to memory the second half of the tune (the simple duet accompaniment arranged by Jason Kleinberg). The biggest takeaway from the challenge is that I need to stop trying to learn new tunes and focus on sounding good first… eliminating the squeaks…[Read more]

That is so cool, what you did with “Garageband”.

That’s a neat variation of “Bile em’ Cabbage”. I’ll have to give it a go.

Very nice! String crossings are clean. I like the tune as well.

Thanks, Mike. Never say never though! I have improved in my ability to read music notation since starting this course.
But I’m only doing this for songs I have learnt and know how to play all the way through without the music – it’s just that as I learn more and more songs the recall of the tunes I’ve learnt a while back is slower. I need a trigg…[Read more] -

Hi Kate
I think the aid will help me. I get feedback that I’m touching the aid and that then makes me straighten the bow.
Did you participate in the mystery tune that Jason had Saturday at 6am? I did and it was good. There is a recording of it. I like learning by ear. -

Progress video! Practice is magical. Nowhere near perfect of course; intonation and rhythm can be improved.

That’s very organised and a good cross over between tune names and music. I’m even more impressed that you can play from sheet music, I think that’s a hurdler I’ll never overcome if I’m honest.

Hi Maggie, thanks for the link for the bowing aid. I’m interested in you’re finding it, and if you feel a difference in your bowing because of it. I definitely need to improve my boing technique – I feel I need specific guidance on how to do the wrist bend because how I hold the bow looks so wooden compared to others how have an elegantly bendy wrist.

Thank you, Cindy! It was me singing, with the auto correct tuning working at full throttle! I’m blown away at all the things you can do on garage band now. I’m still a bit hesitant improvising, but it’s a good way to practice it.

My practice challenge goal was to review and ‘fingerprint’ songs I’ve learnt on my Fiddlehed journey so I can play them without the music. As I am progressing through the intermediate course and learning new songs, the old ones get forgotten – but as soon as I hear or start to play them I can usually play them all t…[Read more]
