Well done, Kate! I’d say you’re ready. Like the little “rif” you put in during the recording. Good use of the fourth finger as well. And yes, your voice is fine!

That was quite nice and well done. I am very impressed. Only thing I can think to say to change it any at all would be to punch up the triplets with a bit of an accent . . . gosh it’s just good as it is.
Squeaky? I didn’t hear it but they make an E string that doesn’t whistle. I have no idea if it is ok to use on an electric violin. And…[Read more]

Yes I agree this is a wonderful fiddle! What a beautiful tone it has. The tune sounds lovely on it. You played well. Thanks for sharing your fiddle finding journey with us. The fiddle does sound like you want to just dig into it and pull out those beautiful sonorous notes.
My fiddle is French and it sounds a bit nasal and pinched…[Read more]

Thanks CB, that’s very kind. I find it a hard song to sing, but I have continued to practice the violin accompaniment and trying to get a bit more relaxed. I’ve had to adjust to the larger size and don’t seem to be squeaking so much on the higher notes. I’m glad I’ve recorded it though, because I can see and hear where I need to improve!

When practicing something difficult, see if you can break it down into a series of small, intermediate steps.
I’ve been learning bluegrass solos from a book by a great fiddler named Annie Staninec. […]

Lovely playing James! I wish I could bring in double stops that don’t sound like an accident! I usually find it takes me 2 days to learn the A part nevermind being able to play a whole tune without reading!

Thanks Carolyn & Cindy! It’s certainly a beautiful sounding violin. I feel really excited & motivated now to improve my playing to do it justice. I made my choice after whittling down the selection to 3 or 4 & was really interested to hear the difference in the tone & sound of them all. Apparently in general, German violins tend to have a bright &…[Read more]

Congratulations, Joanne, on your old new forever fiddle! I’ve watched your dedication in the timing challenge as well as your other videos, and it’s heartwarming to see you take this big leap forward with your new instrument. You look so contented playing it, and it does have a really nice resonance. Lovely, smooth playing on the waltz. I’m…[Read more]

Beautiful sounding fiddle, Jo! It has a deep voice. Reminds me of two old fiddles I found a few years ago. One was German and the other was Czech. Deep throated sound. Can you play the fiddle both left- and right-handed?
Thanks for sharing! Always interested in this journey.
