Working in Irish Fiddle Journey’s Course. Just finished with Module 3. Really like it quite a bit. Maybe it “jostles” something in my ancestral roots.

Hey thanks, Nick! I missed Sunday’s session as I had to work. Did you make and, if so, what was it like.

I play piano as well so I think that have given me an advantage. It gets better the longer I use it. Have noticed an improvement over just a little time. Thanks for the Session info on the tune. I love the history of tunes.

Good job, Mary! Yeah, that is a long one, bravo! Particularly liked your fourth finger placement. Wish I had that kind of dexterity.

Who is Hobart, I wonder?

A couple of theories on origins of Hobart, listed in this post on The Session: https://thesession.org/tunes/8961

Have been amazed at my improvement using my pinky finger this week. It is getting stronger. Not there yet but it’s coming along nicely. Working on Hobart’s Transformation and Flop Eared Mule. Enjoyed transposing some older tunes into other keys. Great fun this fiddling stuff.

Good to hear this!

So, I’m learning how to bow separate one, slur three using Bile me cabbage down. How do I decide when to separate one, slur three, when to slur four (this seems like the best choice to me) and to just separate bows. I am finding it difficult to change the pattern I have already learned. Thanks .

Sounds like you are doing great. There are some pieces that I seem to move along better on with a bit of a swing to the tempo. I probably should put more thought to my bowing but I just sort of go with what feels comfortable. I’ve slowed some videos way down and scrutinized the bowing and they slur a lot. Lots of times when I try to b…

Hey Mary,
Enjoyed the Intermed. Practice last week. Jason sure challenges us. I guess that makes a good teacher. I hope you enjoyed it also. I am working my way through the Irish Fiddle lesson, very slowly; but a bit every day. Today and last night I worked a bit on Rights of Man, just the basic version; trying to learn the tune. I still…

Kate,
Sounds great your playing with the Ukulele Club! Wish we could do that here, but Covid is still ravaging; sometimes as many as 4,000 deaths/day here in the US. Recording music and playing along with the recording later also great. I am working in the Irish Music Course and enjoying it. Every once in a while, I feel like a musician, I…-
Sorry, just saw your message Owen! 2 months later and it looks like things had improved so much over there in the US. We’re still waiting for a roll out of the vaccine so are still having to have a great deal of vigilance as a community. Good excuse to keep practicing on the fiddle! I’m slowly making my way through the intermediate cou…

Hey, I’ve been playing a little over a year but only since March with Jason’s program. I am just starting the immediate level lessons. I have played piano and sung for many years so I read music and struggle with ear training.
You?-
Hi Mary, I’ve been playing violin for just over a year too. I started with the beginner’s course because I really had no idea about bowing etc, though I have played other instruments, I’d never really learnt how to read music properly. I’ve really improved with that and am so much better at following the tempo. The beginner’s course al…

Sounds like we are having similar expereinces. I too, skipped some of the ear training because I as frustrated but have gone back to it. I sometimes try and play along with a group on Youtube. My Friday jam sessions have stopped because covid-19 did a number on the group back in December. I miss playing with people but understand not…
-
I haven’t joined in the group sessions because I’m in Australia and the time zones don’t work, so just working my way through the modules – up to 2.2. I’ve only started gaining confidence playing with others and played with the ukulele club yesterday. It is so much fun and I understand how you must miss your jam sessions. I’ve discovere…
