Advanced Beginner Group 3 years, 3 months agoHey, Advanced Beginners! I just wanted to check in with everyone. For unknown reasons, I hit a slump in my fiddle practice in the last week. It hasn’t always felt fun, and I sounded worse to my own ear, and missed too many days too! Having said that, I’ll miss the next 3 weeks of our Monday meetings, because my husband and I leave on trip to…[Read more]

Advanced Beginner Group 3 years, 4 months ago4 Advanced Beginners met on Zoom on Monday evening, 1/30, at 8 pm EST/ (Hooray for Terri, Mary, Steve, & me!) We took turns playing, tried jamming on mute while someone else played, and talked about breakthroughs we’re having — and some of us are having some! Our next group Zoom will be Monday, February 13, 8 pm EST. All are welcome to join. Ter…[Read more]

Shucks – I’m sorry I missed it. Our school days were extended due to an abundance of snow days in December and it’s been busy. I can’t make the next one either 🙁 because of the school schedule. Darn! Are you all practicing a specific song?
-
No specific song, Elise, but you might want to be ready to play one or two in a round robin.

Advanced Beginner Group 3 years, 4 months agoMany thanks to the six advanced beginners who met on Zoom on Monday, January 23rd. We introduced ourselves, discussed our practice habits & tools we use like Strum machine, Amazing Slowdowner, and Smart Metronome. We hope to make this a recurring meeting on Monday evenings at 8 pm EST, every other week. Terri Marsico agreed to set these up as…[Read more]

Advanced Beginner Group 3 years, 4 months agoHey, y’all! Based on the feedback so far, I’ve set up a Zoom Hangout for Monday evening, January 23, 8 pm EST. Since I am not a professional member of Zoom this meeting is only scheduled for 40 minutes. I’m not a particularly experienced Zoom Host, but I’ll do my best. All are welcome!
Here’s the information! Bridget Balthrop Morton is inviting…[Read more] -

Old-time & Bluegrass Group 3 years, 4 months agoHow many here are interested in old time?
-
I have to admit that I don’t really know the difference! I just googled so now I have a dictionary definition, but I sure couldn’t listen to a tune and know which one it is. Would you mind sharing a couple good Old Time tunes that you like?
-
Hi Elise, well the difference between the two is very big, although they both have similar roots. A couple of my favorite old time tunes are Hangman’s Reel and Shove That Pigs Foot a Little Further into the Fire (quite a title, right?) Here is a link to a You Tube video that will explain the differeces way better than I can in this short…

Me : )
I enjoy listening to bluegrass, but enjoy playing old-time.
-
I prefer Old-Time, but have to learn bluegrass so I can participate in local jams. Locally, I have not found much in the Old-time style. I am in the Knoxville, TN area. If anyone else is in this are and interested in getting together to play, let me know.

Old-time & Bluegrass Group 3 years, 4 months agoWhat are some songs people are working on?
-
Currently working on Keep on the Sunny side in G. Also Tennessee Waltz, I’ll Fly Away, The Touch of Your Hand, I Saw the Light.
-
I have I’ll Fly Away up on my wall and am going to add Sunny Side and Tennessee Waltz. My poor family really has to suffer through whenever I attempt a new song! I do love that I can put my earbuds in and play along with Jason though I suspect I think I sound better than I actually do. 😉
I think my favorite tune to work on these days is S…

I’m working on Hangman’s Reel, Bonaparte’s Retreat, Cumberland Gap, and other old time tunes.
-
I just printed off the sheet music for Cumberland Gap and listened to it. It’s fast! Smiling – too fast for me, but I’m gonna pick away at it and become more familiar.
